Business website concept does not suit the Internet surfer

April 28th, 2008

Building a business website today is a problem. As a business owner you have a lot to say about your business, product, services or about yourself. The problem is that nobody have the patience. Many website includes some really irrelevant content which they think may be important. However as a principal the computer is not a very good media for reading, not to mention the fact that people started to use small fonts in order to condense the site to prevent the first page from flowing (people hate scrolling).

As a result people pass by the first page and if they do not get the information they are looking for in the first glance they run away immediately. The Internet marketers are working in a different way they have a long long page including all the info and the feedbacks (which most people already know are faked) and then in the end they shows the price.

The Internet is considered a “new media” however its actually a screen rather then a piece of paper therefore has to be considered differently then a brochure. The availability of so many sites that offers practically the same products also makes the user very “jumpy” and if he fail to find immediately what he is looking for he will obviously move on to the next site offering the same thing.

Most business website will confirm that the surfers, in most cases, visit their sites’ first page only. And therefore they have to put all the information there and its kind of hard to read it (small fonts, lots of words etc…), and again it doesn’t do the job.

The solution is, to use the advantages of the media. And to place an informative multimedia file, one solution is audio files, but audio files depends highly on the quality of the user sound system, and his ability to understand the accent or the language of the speaker, and of course the length and the content quality of this sound file.

Video is the best possible solution as its visual, attractive and allow you to use text, sound images and motion. But here as well most sites attempt to deliver a message which is too long, too clumsy and using often shows a man/woman speaks, so this solution also does not provide the result needed.

So what are the solutions ?

  1. Fast and simple message – never try to check the limitation of your visitors patience, no more then 1:30 minutes.

  2. Skip unnecessary details – if you want to sell a software do not spend time to explain why you wrote it and what was the challenge.

  3. Minimize the information to: what is this, how good it is, and where to get it – if people will like the message they will ask for the rest of the information themselves.

  4. Put this message in your website front page with several additional relevant links but with no additional text (as much as possible).

  5. Avoid people that talks, even if they are animated figures, most people hate salesmen/women.

Cvide.com has a created this concept and already using it. In Cvide.com we create the video messages. By taking a massive piece of text, and reduce it to the minimum important information. This isn’t a simple task at all, especially when we do it for people (i.e. Video Cvs). But it is probably the most important issue: to identify what is really important and what is not. The rest of it is building up the movie around it making it attractive (music, animation) understood (simple language) and addictive (music files that stays naggingly in your memory).

Once we have the message, it is put on a newly designed front page (index.html) of the website, and thats the first thing the visitor see. Sometimes its the only thing he/she needs to see. So if an impatient potential customer stay there for a minute and a half, the message was delivered !

Now as this message is a video file and actually summarize the website purpose, we now distribute the video as it is all over the web. In a way you can say that everyone that have seen this video is equal to someone that visited your site.

A lot of SEO “experts” will claim that reducing the site quantity means badly effecting the SEO. This is nonsense ! The video is distributed in the top rated websites and catch places in the top results of the google and yahoo searches (especially the google that gives priority to videos).

Here is an example: The recent video we have created was for the book “1001 nuits insolites” by Denise Cabelli – the book is in French and deals with unusual lodging places around the world. 24 hours after the movie has been spread here is the google search results:

for “1001 nuit” (a very common description of the Arabian night) produces 222,000 results – the 2nd in the first page of the search result is our movie.

For “Denise cabelli” which is a veteran journalist all the first page of results is our videos.

For “Hebergement insolite” the first search page is full of our videos (from 278,000 results)

All this after 24 hours only. And this is just a simple example and there are many more. Some claim I am a magician… the answer is no, i am not. I have been here for a long time, i open my eyes and use my knowledge. And the results are immediate. The message is now floating all over the Internet, easy to find without even having a website. And on the website it just tells exactly what it has to tell, no more no less.

Actually if you check carefully normal website (static) will actually be found in the search results only once (at the top) and therefore all the rest is a waste of energy and a lot of money.
